Spyware is a separate threat.

Use the Internet Options to delete all offline files.

Get and update several Anti-spyware solutions. I use AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search %26 Destroy. I use the free versions from http://www.download.com Update and run these regularly. Especially IMMEDIATELY after an unexpected pop-up.

Use MSCONFIG to disable any unneeded startup programs.

You might consider more RAM for your system. Windows XP will run better with 512 MB or more. Visit http://www.coastmemory.com to look up what your system can use.

Get a anti-spyware loaded on your PC it is better than AV as a rootkit could be killing your process.

You can also try this product (still in beta stage) HELIOS - Advanced Malware System.

The product can detect even FUTO rootkit (considered as the most difficult ones to deal with)

P.S. Defragmenting your hard disk (ideally once every month) is a good measure too.
