Go with one of the top 10 and give the freebies a wide birth. If your budget is tight check out eBay. Kaspersky is the bench mark, but Nortons 2007 is fine (nothing older).
In my opinion, the best anti-spyware/anti-virus program is AVG. I like it because the user interface is easy to use, it does a good job cleaning up spyware and viruses and its FREE! Personally I bought Webroot's Spysweeper, their product is great and well worth the money. Watch Best Buy ads because sometimes it goes on sale for $10 to $15.
