Whats a good anti virus for a lap top?

First of all, stay away from Norton and McAfee. There's no reason to pay for something that doesn't even work well, especially when there are free alternatives. Norton in particular can cause huge problems if you ever decide to uninstall it, to the extent that it will literally brick/hose a PC.

If you want to go with a free program, I'd recommend Avast (which I use) and Avira, both of which are free. You have to register Avast every 14 months, and Avira will occasionally throw up a nag window as it updates, but that's it. Both work well, detect virii that McAfee misses and are much leaner than either McAfee or Norton (they won't use up all of your system resources).

If you have to pay for a product, then I'd recommend Trend Micro's PCcillin product. It does a superior job and doesn't slow things down like the more popular products. On the other hand, it's not free, so...ahem...Avast/Avira?

While you're at it, make sure to install Spybot, Ad Aware and Windows Defender. Those three programs do a pretty good job of keeping you malware free, and are free for personal PC's (as opposed to business/corporate).

I would recommend AVG Free and Spybot Search and Destroy. AVG successfully contains trojans, but I haven't used Spybot although I have heard that it's very good. I hope that helps.
