Both Avast and AVG are good choices. In deciding which one to choose, you need to know how they differ. Please read the following article which compares the detection rates and other features of the 3 most popular free antivirus program, which are Antivir, Avast and AVG.

Somethings you should consider. Grisoft's AVG has recently been upgrade from version 7.1 to 7.5 and by recent I mean this month. No extensive tests have been run its detection rate. In the past, AVG has the lowest detection rate of the three; however, it could have easily been improve with this latest version. In fact, I am eager to test it. It is a solid performer regardless of which version you use. AVG does not require a large amount of resources, which is mainly why people choose to use it. It is free forever and updating virus signatures in a cinch.
I do admire Avast, of the 3 it has the most features. It protects instant messaging, peer-to-peer file sharing, wireless networking, host intrusion detection and, of course, solid detection rates. If you use any of these, you should definitely consider Avast. But, i should warn you that you need to register every 3 months to continue using it.
Antivir has the best detection rate of the 3; however, it does not scan incoming e-mail messages - it does scan outgoing mail. Some people frown on it because of this deficit.
